环球在线消息：2006年11月15日，在国会参议院军事委员会上作证时，美国国务院高级顾问、伊拉克事务协调员戴维·萨特尔菲尔德证实，美国“原则上”愿意就伊拉克安全问题与伊朗直接会谈。
美国能源部宣布，美国2006年8月30日在内华达州地下试验场进行亚临界核试验，这是美国自1997年以来第23次亚临界核试验。这次亚临界核试验将由洛斯阿拉莫斯国家实验室实施，目的是为了“搜集具体的数据，在无需进行真正核试验的情况下，保证国家核武器的安全与可靠”。据报道，在亚临界核试验中，可以少量使用高浓缩铀，试验时不发生真正的核爆炸。
人民网2006年6月14日讯，美国的两大核武实验室就投入了研制下一代“更安全核弹”的工作。有关方面宣称，希望能在最短的时间内开发出美国“20年来首枚新型核弹”。除了新型核弹头外，美国研究机构还提出了专门用来炸毁敌人地堡的“迷你核弹”，以及“核弹钻地机”等武器。
